More on the Wild Side now

We disembark our cruise at this funny little port of Whittier.  See the modern multi story apartment block at the base of the hill?  Well everyone lives there!  literally!  Everything and everybody under one roof.  There’s even a tunnel out of there for the kids to get to school, so that they cant use being snowed in as an excuse to miss school!  The nearest town is Anchorage, and the only way to get there, other than by boat, is through a 3 mile long single lane tunnel through a mountain!  When the cruise ships come in the traffic queues are pretty long!

We have a “pit stop” in Anchorage en route to our next overnight stay.  We were driven around an airport for “float planes”.  It’s a large lake with small moorings all around where families park their planes.  Apparantly in Alaska you can get a pilots license at 14yo!!

There are cars parked next to empty moorings, and often shacks too, like beach huts.  And all these little 2 seater “float planes”, some so small they looked like toys!  Seems a fishing trip here involves driving your car to the plane, then fly off into the wilderness to catch your salmon.  There’s nothing like it anywhere else in the world!

Lunch was interesting - we chose from fast food stalls at Anchorage Markets.  We chose one of each, and I can vouch for the Wild Salmon Dogs - pretty tasty, once you got past the weirdness of a fish sausage!
