So this sedate Scenic Tour group transfer from Anchorage to Talkeetna by boat - but of course! Water, water everywhere! But we weren’t really expecting a jet boat up a wild raging torrent! it is the sort of river you go white water rafting on, but we were going against the current. What I didn’t realise was that a lot of these small communities are more accessible in the winter than in the summer - back in the day I mean. In the spring anyway. Alaska is all about mountains and rivers. When the rivers are frozen over they are easy to cross. In the summer they are raging torrents! Of course nowadays there are plenty of bridges and powered boats.
Even so, we the driver did a remarkable job navigating the river whose characteristics change daily. the murky waters of the glacier fed river hid many hazards - shifting silt banks and tree branches and logs rushing past at a great rate of knots.
We survived.
Signs of beaver activity on the banks. They can chew down a 6 inch diameter tree in 10 minutes!
